Emmerdale

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Nicola King takes her frustrations out on Mandy Dingle next week as her marriage remains on the rocks.

Nicola has told her husband Jimmy that they need to go their separate ways – and it's clear that she partly blames Mandy for the situation when they end up in a huge brawl.

Jimmy and Mandy recently shared a kiss as they were brought together by Paul's death. Since then, Mandy has encouraged Jimmy to work things out with Nicola.

Nicola Wheeler, who plays Nicola, recently caught up with

Digital Spy and other media

to share more about next week's scenes.

How are things between Nicola and Jimmy next week?

"At this point, they're getting a divorce. Nicola recently went ballistic, ended the relationship completely and kicked Jimmy out.

"But they've decided not to tell the children until after Angelica's birthday party, because they want to give them one last day of excitement and happiness as a family."

The fight starts when Mandy hears Nicola bad-mouthing her to Rodney. Is Nicola deliberately stirring up trouble here, knowing Mandy is nearby?

"Oh, absolutely! It's because on the morning of Angelica's party, Jimmy arrives late because he has found an apartment. It becomes very real in that moment.

"Although Nicola and Jimmy are celebrating their daughter turning 12, they're also commiserating the end of their marriage. Angelica was conceived in a van and that was the start of their relationship.

"Angelica's party is probably the end of their marriage, so I think Nicola is just very depressed and struggling to keep it under wraps, even though they're all smiley faces for the children.

"Then obviously Mandy turns up and it's like a red rag to a bull. Nicola literally turns all of her attention on Mandy."

What happens?

"All of the angst and emotion that has been building up over the last few months, Nicola offloads it onto Mandy, basically. Nicola gets a thwack on the head from Mandy with an inflatable, which is hilarious.

"It's a deserved thwack on the head I have to say, because she is vile about Mandy's mothering, when of course we all know it was Paul who was the bad parent, not Mandy.

"But that's all Nicola needed. One hit on the head and it's 'great, Wrestlemania, let it begin!'"

How does the fight progress from there?

"What I love about the fight is that it's very comedic. It's not done in a catfight way, with scratching or slapping. We start using all of these childhood props.

"They start whacking each other with these plastic things, poor Rodney gets hit, and then it turns into a water fight.

"Then the cake becomes involved. What a coincidence there happens to be two cakes, so obviously it's a face in each cake.

"It just becomes this kind of brawl. It's not really this full-on, aggressive fight. It's very funny. It's meant to make the audience laugh."

We've heard you did a lot of the fight yourselves...

"Yes, it's only really the throws and the lands that the stunt doubles did. Unfortunately I've got a back injury, but it would have been us doing the whole thing if it had been left to Lisa!"

How did you feel about it being so messy?

"I went to the shower at work because I was like a Krispy Kreme by the end of it. We had factor 50 on, but we both got burned by buttercream burning. It was like we were just covered in oil and it kept dripping off.

"For each new take, we had to keep dipping into the cakes and splashing it back on our faces because it was just melting. It was so fun – it was the dirtiest I've been at work!

"This is definitely the most fun fight I've ever had on Emmerdale. It was just brilliant. I was knackered the next day – we had to come in, as we had more stuff to shoot. It was just like: 'Oh God, I'm so tired'.

"We'd just literally spent a day being physical. We were running around screaming and shouting at each other and then laughing once they shouted 'cut'. We were in hysterics."

Who wins the fight?

"Nicola's like a Jack Russell, you just can't put her down. No matter how much Mandy puts her down, she's back up, straight at her ankles again.

"That's what makes it fun. Although you think they're not an even match, they actually are both quite evenly matched.

"Jimmy kind of wins the fight in the end, as it ends with the bouncy castle being deflated. Then obviously it's the embarrassment of what they've done. They're both totally shame-faced at the end of it.

"It's like: 'Oh God, we've destroyed this child's party'. Poor Angelica comes and everything's wrecked."

Could Nicola and Mandy become friends?

"They're frenemies. They have quite a nice moment the next day, where it's a mutual thing of: 'Okay, I know where you were coming from'.

"Nicola is apologetic, but she usually holds on to bitterness for many years, doesn't she? She doesn't forgive people easily. But yeah, they're frenemies."

Would Nicola understand if Jimmy and Mandy wanted to stay friends?

"Maybe given time, yes. I think what we need to develop first is Nicola and Mandy's relationship, and then she would totally trust her with him."

Do you hope Nicola and Jimmy reunite?

"I think there's scope for them to get back together. When Jimmy's head turned towards Mandy, he was in a very difficult place at the time. He was going through a lot of emotional turmoil and feeling guilt over the death of Paul.

"I would say sometimes, life can throw a curveball, and that's what is going to happen. Maybe it's not about those two anymore – and that's what is going to happen in the future. It's not just about their relationship, it's about the kids and what they can do for the kids."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
