Where Can I Travel To The Beach

More summer weather is expected for this Black Friday, so let’s skip the shopping and go to the beach — by bus!

There’s been a bit of handwringing lately about how to get people from the new Blue Line trolley to San Diego city beaches. The main focus of the extended rail line from downtown to University City is to connect job centers, develop housing around stations and, hopefully, get people out of their cars.

Yet the new line brings rail traffic closer to the sands of La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Mission Beach than before. Unfortunately, it’s not really even tantalizingly close. The stop near Pacific Beach — the Balboa Avenue Transit Center — is some 2 miles from the ocean. Plus, there’s a nasty intersection to deal with if hoofing it or riding a bike from the station.

A tunnel or bridge for pedestrians and bike riders is being discussed, along with possible shuttles.
