The Milwaukee Bucks just survived a seven-game slug-fest in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

They have another fight on their hands in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The postseason upstart Atlanta Hawks rode a sublime performance from standout guard Trae Young to score a 116-113 victory over the Bucks in Game 1 on Wednesday night at Fiserv Forum.

Young, who has made a star turn these playoffs, finished with 48 points on 17-for-34 shooting. He added 11 assists and seven rebounds. He repeatedly got into the paint, compromising the Bucks' defense.

"He's a great young player," Bucks guard Jrue Holiday said. "Stepping over half court, he's a threat from anywhere on the floor. We have to find ways to be able to rush him, (get him to) take contested shots and take advantage of them on defense."

Young's fearlessness as a 22-year-old guard has ignited a Hawks team that was 14-20 on Feb. 28. Fifth-seeded Atlanta has won six road games during the playoffs, upsetting the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers in the first two rounds.

"We've been very focused and very locked in when it comes to preparing for our opponent," Young said. "We didn't get a high seed, so we've got to try to steal one on the road. Game 1 is definitely a game that you can really surprise that team. I think with the way we've been playing coming out of the gate, you can just tell we're really focused on our attention to details when it comes to the other team."

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Holiday combined for 67 points, but fellow Bucks star Khris Middleton couldn't consistently find his shooting stroke and had just 15.

Antetokounmpo and Holiday shot 28 for 50, while their teammates were just 19 for 57. Middleton finished 6 for 23, missing all nine of his attempts from three-point range. The Bucks have struggled from long distance in the playoffs and were just 8 for 36 in Game 1.

"Just got to be better," Middleton said. "It's as simple as that. Get into my spots, play-making, everything. Just got to be better."

Young vexed the Bucks’ defense early with an array of floaters. He scored eight of Atlanta’s first 10 points and finished with 12 in the first quarter.

After grueling seven-game series in the second round, both teams struggled from long range to start Game 1. The Hawks were just 1 for 10 and the Bucks 2 of 11 in the first quarter.

Bucks forward Bobby Portis, who did not play in the final three games of the Nets series, checked into the game to a nice applause from the home crowd at the 4:55 mark of the first quarter. He made a layup off a nice assist from Holiday and also hit a three-pointer to give the Bucks a lift.

Milwaukee gained some separation early in the second quarter, taking a 38-29 lead while Young was out of the game. Upon his return, Young hit back-to-back threes to bring the Hawks within 42-39.  Atlanta took the lead at 46-45 on a three-pointer by Kevin Huerter, prompting a timeout by Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer.
